Books, audiobooks & the ever-growing TBR pile
My problem? I’m such a prolific writer that I have trouble carving out time to read. But I do LOVE a good book.
One of my favorites is Stephen King’s On Writing. It reminds me to keep reading, keep learning, and keep showing up for the craft. Thanks for the motivation, Steve.
Here’s what I’m reading, listening to, and eyeing for the top of the TBR pile, along with a few of my very favorite reads. Go on, have a look. Your own TBR pile could use a little company.

The Bright Years
by Sarah Damoff
I’m reading The Bright Years, a story about four generations of a Texas family, the secrets they keep, and the things they pass down without meaning to. With a marriage strained by addiction and a daughter trying to make sense of her parents’ past, there’s plenty of complicated love to untangle.
You know I have a soft spot for imperfect people trying to find their way back to one another. Apparently, writing about complicated families isn’t enough. I need to spend my reading time with them, too.

The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store
by James McBride
In my ears right now is The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store. A skeleton discovered in a well opens the door to the story of Chicken Hill, a Pennsylvania neighborhood where Black residents and Jewish immigrants live side by side. At its heart is a community working to protect a deaf boy from being institutionalized.
A mystery gets my attention, but people looking out for one another? That’s what makes me lean in. I love a story that asks what we owe our neighbors - especially when doing the right thing means making a little trouble.

Maya & Natasha
by Elyse Durham
Next on my list is Maya & Natasha, about twin sisters pursuing the same ballet dream in the Soviet Union during the Cold War. But when a government rule means their dream company can accept only one of them, sisterly love gets tangled up with ambition, rivalry, and betrayal.
What happens when the person you love most is also standing between you and everything you want? That is exactly the kind of messy human question that gets a book onto my TBR pile. This one might be cutting in line.
